Background

CleanStar Energy is a private limited company registered in New Delhi, India. The company was launched in 2005 based on award-winning research at Oxford University. It now has offices in Pune, Maharashtra and field sites in central and western Maharashtra.

CleanStar is proud to support the CleanStar Trust for Sustainable Development, an independent  non-profit group that helps the rural poor fight climate change.

Founders

Sagun Saxena

Sagun first became interested in renewable energy while studying Chemical Engineering and Material Science at the University of California at Berkeley. While there, he conducted research on on advanced battery technologies, fuel cells, and biogas production technologies. He then earned 8 years of international consulting and project management experience and an MBA from the University of Oxford before finally returning to India in 2004 to set up CleanStar Energy.

Shashank Verma

Shashank first became interested in renewable energy during his MBA at the University of Oxford, where he developed a business plan and later feasibility study on the commercial production of biodiesel in rural India. Both projects were performed with support from the Planning Commission of the Government of India and earned special distinctions from the Oxford examiners. Prior to his MBA, Shashank trained as a Software Engineer from R.E.C. Kurukshetra and worked for 5 years with leading Indian and international IT companies.

Ashok Pawar

Ashok has been CleanStar's founding director of field operations. Ashok is an accomplished project manager with over 25 years of rural development experience. He has received several awards for his work with local NGOs and earned special UNDP recognition for a landmark project he led after the Latur Earthquake in 1993 to rehabilitate an entire village with the participation of affected people. Since 2005, Ashok Pawar has been directing rural bioenergy agro-forestry operations and community outreach for CleanStar. He has significant first-hand experience evaluating project sites, engaging local communities and government officials, setting up large nurseries, organising and training field workers, and managing established tree plantations.
